Going against the CFL’s top team on the road, Saturday night, the Ottawa REDBLACKS put forth a valiant effort with numerous banged up bodies, but just weren’t able to keep pace with the Toronto Argonauts for a full game, falling 40-27.
Dustin Crum threw for 183 yards, and a touchdown while visibly limping, before being forced to exit the game due to injury in the second half. Devonte Williams scampered for 125 yards and a major on the ground, leaving him 48 yards shy of 1,000 on the season, heading into Ottawa’s season finale.
The game’s most electric play belonged to REDBLACKS kick returner Tobias Harris, who took off for a 93-yard score on a Toronto kickoff, early in the second quarter. His first CFL touchdown was also the first KOR score in the league, this season.
Similar to their last meeting with the Argos, the REDBLACKS came roaring out of the gate, as Crum hit Justin Hardy for a 55-yard pass on the opening play. The Ottawa pivot capped off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Bralon Addison, giving the road side a 7-0 lead.
Toronto responded with a long drive engineered by Chad Kelly, and finished off by a quarterback sneak touchdown from Cameron Dukes, and the extra point by Boris Bede knotted things up at seven apiece.
The REDBLACKS regained their lead after another long drive, thanks to a five-yard score by Williams, but the Argos again returned fire, with a rushing touchdown by Deonta McMahon to tie the score.
On the ensuing kickoff, however, Harris opened his account with an incredible return touchdown, getting some great blocking down the field, and knifing through Toronto defenders. Michael Domagala made the PAT, and Ottawa took their lead back, this time 21-14.
A Bede field goal made it a three-point game, and Domagala answered with one more, but a second from Bede made it a three-pont game, as the REDBLACKS led 24-20 going into the half.
The sequence repeated itself early in the third quarter, making it 27-26 Ottawa, before Kelly found DaVaris Daniels for a 45-yard touchdown, and the Argos took their first lead of the night, 34-27 thanks to a two-point conversion run by Kelly.
With Crum out of the game, and Tyrrell Pigrome in for Ottawa, the Argos were content to run down the clock on this one. Bede kicked two more field goals, spoiling a hard-fought effort by the REDBLACKS, with 40-27 being the final score.
The REDBLACKS get one last bye week, before closing out their season against these same Argos at TD Place on Saturday, October 28, at 7:00pm.
